So in response to the recent compromising of Aydann's account, I've been trying to find a more secure solution to our browsing habits. While I'd like to feel safe just using firefox + no script, I've been seeing more and more people who were using those who are getting infected through flash exploits and other things that no script just doesn't block. To that End, I've gone a little drastic, but want to share with anyone who is interested:
First thing you'll want to do is download Microsoft Virtual PC (now a free download) from
Next download the 50 mb iso image of Damn Small Linux from here and save it to your hard drive.
After installing virtual pc 2007, start it up and click new... then click next the Create a Virtual Machine and click next Give the new machine a name(don't name this the same as your current pc) next Operating system should be set to "other" next use the recommended ram (128mb) I did test this with 24 and 64 mb of ram (their minimum required, and a middle of the road amount and was not satisfied with performance.) next a new virtual hard disk next Leave the path as default(unless you want it somewhere else) decrease the size of the vhd to just a few megabytes. This version of linux will live in that portion of memory you allotted to it and shouldn't use any hard drive space. However, I did give it 128 megs of hard disk space, just in case i wanted to mess with some of the other utilities. next finish then highlight your new machine and click start. When the new window pops up and the virtual machine begins to boot up, click the CD menu and the option "Capture ISO image..." You then need to select the location that you downloaded the 50 meg Damn Small Linux .iso to and click open.
After going through this, the machine should automatically restart (you may need to restart manually from the Action menu) and boot to a linux desktop. You'll find firefox down in the lower menu.
The whole reason I went through this was to create a disposable desktop that could not read from the hard discs that store my play online information. I am able to run this and plenty of other programs at the same time, without too much of a performance hit. My system is several years old, so i'm by no means cutting edge.
I did not install any vmware tools, nore mount any hard drives to the install, as I wanted to be as seperated from them as possible. Every time I close the virtual machine, it reverts teh environment to the defaults, and wipes the slate clean.
It is extreme, but I really would rather not anyone i know have to go through the process we recently did.
